DAILY ACTIVITIES
- Art – Join us in creARTivity for a hands-on play-based art experience designed to inspire the mind and excite the senses.
- Story Time – It’s story time at the Discovery Space. Grab a seat and read along to some stories from around the world.
- Discovery Activity – Everyone loves our activities! This term, we’ll be running activities that explore and celebrate global literacies.
- Movement Monday (11am) – Join us every Monday for a movement-based activity and explore aerobics, musical statues, yoga and more through song, movement and dance.
All activities are FREE after entry!

This month, the theme is Through the Looking Glass where children listen to a read aloud of ‘Some Bugs’ by Angela Delitizi, investigate objects and textures with digital microscopes and play a game of Find and Seek. We’ll give you three hints to uncover micro-discoveries!
Light, colour, sound! What can we do with glass?
Join the Children’s Technology Place Space for a special Science Week Activity on Thursday 18 August from 10 am to 11 am. In this workshop, children will play with light, sound and colour and investigate the science week theme of glass. We will explore xylophones that are made from glass and water and then record the different sounds we can make.
We will also use kaleidoscopes and explore these patterns using iPads. Bookings essential. Suited to children 3 and over.
Children’s Book Week
Be sure to drop into the UOW Children’s Technology Play Space on Friday 26 August at 11 am when we celebrate Children’s Book Week. We will read Amira’s Suitcase by Vikki Conley and Nicky Johnston and explore our own treasures and memories just like Amira does. Literacy experts in the Children’s Technology Play Space will stream the reading live to the Early Start Engagement Centres across NSW.

Focused on daily routines and play, the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) integrates both behavioural and developmental principles to empower children with ASD to become active participants in the world around them. Research has found that ESDM can significantly improve cognitive and social and communication skills in children with ASD, as well as reducing maladaptive behaviours.

The Discovery Space will be celebrating National Science Week and Book Week from 15 August to 28 August. During this fortnight, we are partnering with the University of Wollongong’s School of Earth, Atmospheric and Life Sciences to deliver a program inspired by their Exhibition of Art, Science and Creativity – Antarctic Futures.
Our program will include a range of Antarctic activities, including Science Shows, STEAM programs, interactive stories and much more !!!

We encourage you to visit the exhibition in the UOW Gallery located in the Jillian Broadbent building, directly across the road from the Discovery Space. The gallery is open Monday to Wednesday from 10 am to 4 pm.

Q&A with Antarctic Researchers!
Ever wondered what it’s like to visit Antarctica? Come to the Discovery Space on Monday 29 August and talk to experts Ms Georgia Watson and Dr Melinda Waterman about Antarctica. Both Georgia and Melinda have both been fortunate to visit the beautiful continent and are here to answer childrens questions! Find out what Antarctica is, how to get there and all about the animals and plants that call Antarctica home.
There will be three Q & A sessions on the day in the Discovery Space, running for 15 minutes each:

Georgia is a scientific research officer at UOW in a large national program called Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future. As part of her role, she got to visit Casey Station, East Antarctica, to collect moss samples as part of a long project measuring how the moss health is responding to changing environmental pressures.
Melinda Waterman is a scientist at the University of Wollongong. She has a background in biological sciences and chemistry, and enjoys playing the piano and dancing. She is a passionate science communicator who is currently researching Antarctic moss at the University of Wollongong.
